Here are some websites that have a great deal of information for aspiring writers. Some are free programs that are quite useful, others are places to gather inspiration or to simply meet other writers.
 

Storybook- Storybook is a free (open source) novel-writing tool for creative writers, novelists and authors which will help you to keep an overview of multiple plot-lines while writing books, novels or other written works.

 

Celtx-Celtx is the world's first all-in-one media pre-production software system. It replaces "paper & binder" pre-production with a digtial approach that's more complete, simpler to work with, and easier to share.

 

Nanowrimo- National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000 word) novel by midnight November 30.

 

ebookcrossroads-science fiction writing.-This is a great resource page for the aspriing sci-fi writer. Great blogs, industry information, with tips and idea prompts.

 

Smashwords- A great place for writers of all types to publish their own ebooks. I use it and love it. You can be a published author on your terms.

 

RolePlayGateway- A great community of writers of all ages and skill levels who get together to write collaborative fiction (textual roleplaying) of all types and genres.  

 

Open Office- A great open source productivity suite that is comparable to Microsoft Office. If you are on a tight budget, this is the suite for you. I use it and have not regretting it once.
